OUR Story

real food bus

The Real Food Shop is a project of the Peasant Evolution Producers' Cooperative (PEPC), started up with support from the Big Lottery's Village SOS fund and the Dorset Community Fund. We're based not far from the Jurassic Coast near the Dorset, Devon and Somerset borders. Like so many rural areas of the country, ours faces a lack of direct access to good quality food for many people. As a small scale organic producers' cooperative, we'd like to see that change.

We supply fresh organic produce, preserves, meat, dairy and more from local farms and businesses, travelling proud aboard our Real Food Shop flagship the Charmouth Dragon. The shop's exterior was designed in collaboration with our co-op members and hand painted by professional signwriter Jemma Thompson and Fivepenny Farm's Kerry Haywood. The interior was designed and built by Winsdor chair maker and PEPC member David Saltmarsh, who'd been wondering what he was going to do with that beautiful piece of redwood.

As well as the shelf space in our beautiful shop, PEPC members enjoy access to the co-op's timber framed processing barn with juicing, butchery, processing facilities and meeting space. And all that activity of course leads to more top quality local products for all of us to enjoy.

* to provide healthy local produce and 'old-fashioned-values added' products to rural residents whose real options are dwindling

* to develop markets for and promote development of new products by smallholders within the cooperative

* to cultivate a healthy appreciation for good food sustainably produced within the local community, building ever-stronger support for the Shop and for the cooperative itself

In local folklore, the Charmouth Dragon is the source of that thick mist of dragon smoke you'll sometimes observe rolling out from the mouth of the River Char over the coastal cliffs at Golden Cap, a stunning natural phenomenon unique to the area and a story not many people seem to remember.

Our Dragon, we hope, will help to rekindle a similar spirit of reverence and wonder at the beauty and bounty of our social and natural heritage.
